Question of the Week Archives

Question:

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has suggested that schools plan alternative ways to continue lessons in the event of an H1N1 epidemic. What will you do to help your students continue learning if they are absent due to H1N1 or if school actually closes?

Replies:

Dave Fones - Champaign, IL
First I would do all I could to ensure that students have their textbooks, post assignments and copies of work sheets to the internet. Videotape lessons and if school is not closed, classroom discussions to be posted as podcasts on my websites. I am working on a plan to ensure all students know how to use wikies and blogs in the near future, to maximize class participation.

If the H1N1 was to ever be an epidemic in this area, most of my students have my phone number and email address. I will email the lessons, activities, or even choose activities of the research nature for those kids with computers at home. For those students without a computer, I will take the lessons to their house and put in mailbox or door.
