TeachersFirst Edge
New web 2.0 tools appear each day. Many of these tools were not originally intended for classroom use, but they can be powerful learning tools for today's techno-savvy students and their more adventurous teachers. These sites appear (and frequently disappear) very quickly, launched by creative techno-geeks out there in the world.
Many of these tools require a higher-than-average set of teacher tech skills or some extra monitoring to assure student "safety." TeachersFirst Edge reviews these "tools on the Edge" carefully, and with specific ideas for using them safely and effectively in teaching and learning. Reviews point out any safety or policy concerns for the tool and offer links to management tips for each concern.

Options include lesson planning, worksheet creation, text-leveling tools, and more. After choosing a tool, complete the form that asks for information like grade level, topic, and additional context. Add a file, content from Google Drive, a link, or a YouTube video. Adding content from Google Drive requires logging in to a Padlet account. After adding information, click the bright yellow/green bubble next to the form to generate content. When finished, copy the text to a document, export it to Google Docs or PDF, or use the share link to share the URL of a view-only version of your prompt and output.

After introducing the AI prompt feature, have students create diagrams "on the fly" to organize information. After selecting a generator, follow the prompt to access a form to add information such as grade level, topic or learning objective, and other directions. After the tool generates a response, you can request changes, edit the information manually, or save the document. Choose the Manage Document dropdown box to copy the document to your clipboard, save it as a PDF file, export it to Google Docs, or download your activity as a Microsoft .docx file. As you create activities, they are saved in the My Content area to revisit and reuse as needed.

Create charts, diagrams, flipbooks, and more with tools offered by Visual Paradigm Online Productivity Suite. Visit the pricing page for the robust list of free offerings, including 2D and 3D character animations and PDF editing tools. Get started with the Explore dropdown at the top of the page and select from available options. As you begin creating, choose from the many templates and follow the links to build and edit your design. When complete, share designs as images or PDF files, copy them to Microsoft Office as images, or download them to your device. Exports also offer the option to copy the embed code to insert the image on a website. Registration isn't required; however, creating a free account allows users to return to the site to edit and reuse their designs.
