Although this page has been archived and is no longer updated, all links are functional. This "drag and drop" activity challenges students to put fractions in order from the lowest to the highest. Scroll to the bottom of this teacher page to find the activity. The activity continues to offer new numbers and options, so you may "play" as often as you wish. The activity offers a full screen option. There is also a link for reviewing information or introducing the topic (Revision Bite) and an online quiz. The entire interactive is embeddable by copying/pasting the "code" into your class web page or wiki.

tag(s): fractions (229)

In the Classroom

Share this site with your students on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the Revision Bite as an anticipatory set for a lesson about fractions. Then use the activities and online quiz as enhancements to your lesson (or even AS the lesson). The site is ready to go, easy to follow, educational, and simple for both teachers and students to use. Why not have students work in groups and create their own interactive fraction activities using PowerPoint (including graphics), or even create their own videos demonstrating fractions and share them on TeacherTube (explained here).

Provide this link in your class newsletter so students can practice fractions at home.

Although this website appears "plain vanilla" it is really extraordinary! The Bitesize Algebra website includes review activities (titled "revise" at this BBC website), interactive videos, online tests, and more. The main topic areas include Formulas and Equations, Inequalities, Graphs, Quadratic Graphs, & Sequences. Each topic area includes numerous subtopics. This site was created by BBC, so you may notice some slight spelling differences and British currency instead of dollars. If you are outside of the UK, the video may say the content is not available in your location. The rest of the content is well worth your time.

This is a fabulous site to use with your class to review concepts that are difficult to grasp. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share the revise(review) information and activity. Then have students work on independent computers to complete the online test that reviews that concept.

Are you looking for a new twist in your math lessons? Why not use these ready to go math mysteries! Most of the mysteries present students with a short story to read and then a quick math problem to solve at the end. These mysteries are sure to engage your students and promote creative thinking. Although the website may appear as a simple list of activities, this website is a gem. The list of mysteries includes the title, difficulty level, and skill necessary. There are three difficulty levels and eight varieties of skills (including Geometry & Spatial Relations, Fractions & Ratios, Whole Number Operations, Logical Reasoning, and others). There is also a teacher's guide that includes objectives, standards, how to use the activities, extension activities, and assessment.

tag(s): decimals (125), equations (153), fractions (229), logic (244), measurement (178), money (184), patterns (86), probability (137), ratios (63)

In the Classroom

These activities are ideal for a learning center, computer cluster, or individual computers. Why not make a list of all of the mysteries at this site. Have students record the correct answer to each of the mysteries as they complete them.

The mystery activities would also work on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Project the "Mystery of the Day" and have students keep a "Mystery Journal" with all of their answers. Review the answer (and process) together. Challenge students to write some mysteries of their own and share them on a class wiki or blog.

If you are looking for a new way to teach and practice fractions, take a look at this website that was collected by a math specialist (former 5th grade teacher). The website includes nearly twenty interactive math activities, which all relate to fractions. Some of the general topics include fraction strips, circle fractions, area fractions, like fractions, fraction bars, fractions and decimals, fractions and percentages, comparing fractions, and several others. Most of the activities require FLASH, some require JAVA. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..

Or students could work on individual computers in the computer lab or on laptops. This website could also be used as a learning station on a classroom computer. What a wonderful tool to provide to parents (in a class newsletter or on your class website) for students to gain additional practice at home, or even for enrichment and/or advancement for your gifted students.

Use this set of simple online tools to generate worksheets for everything from magic squares to converting fractions, decimals, and percents. You set the requirements for the worksheet, add a title and directions, and the generator "makes" the sheet, ready for you to print and copy for classroom use. Topics include: premade sheets from Gr 1-4, flashcards, math bingo, metric conversion, multiplication charts, Least Common Multiple,Greatest Common Factor, Exponents, and more. Teachers from Gr 1 to pre-algebra can use this one!

In the Classroom

After you print the worksheet and before you close the page, be sure you click to generate the answer sheet! Share this link on your teacher web page for parents and students to make practice activities for at-home review. Be sure to include directions on your web page for what settings students should use (number of decimal places, for example).

Younger students will love "playing teacher" and making sheets at home for their parents or for each other at school. If they check the answers manually, they will practice, too! Suggest this idea to elementary parents at conferences and give your students some stickers to "correct" their parents work!

This multi-faceted site is simply designed but extremely useful to students and adults of all ages. It does assume that they can read. The purpose of the website is to help individuals solve math problems. The user actually chooses the math topic and enters the specific math problem. The answers provided include a detailed description. There are seven general areas (Math for Everyone, General Math, K-8 Math, Algebra, Plots & Geometry, Trig. & Calculus and Other Stuff). At the "Math for Everyone" page, the topics include calculating a tip, estimating retirement, loans and more! All pages and activities are interactive and individualized for the user.

Teachers can use this tool to help students of all ages understand difficult mathematical concepts. High school teachers could help students understand "real world math," such as how much a car payment will cost. Teachers could also make these interactive activities a class challenge on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Include the link on your tecaher web page for parents and support teachers to use together with struggling students who need more practice. Editor's note: This site is free as of Mar, 2007. This may change in the future.

Have a ball on this highly interactive, attractive, and entertaining site that teaches all sorts of math skills for grades K-6. Check out Weighing Wangdoodles to practice balancing equations, learn about perimeter, practice word problems, solve logic puzzles, and even watch video problem-solving challenges. View the video "Math Apprentice" to learn more about how math is used in the "real world." This is certain to be a favorite both in school and at home. Teachers can even build their own worksheets to specifications by topic and level. Try the math Olympics, get caught up in fractions playground or money mania (near the bottom of the page). Every activity allows you to differentiate by skill level. This one is a teacher's dream.
