Known as the "Mother of the Blues," she was an influencer to three generations of artists from Langston Hughes, to Bessie Smith, to Alice Walker. Read this article to find out more about Ma Rainey.

In the Classroom
Introduce this article and enhance student learning by using Read Ahead, reviewed here, to highlight important sections, keywords, and create a vocabulary list. Next, have students read the biography in pairs, and further enhance student learning by asking them to use Twee, reviewed here, to highlight famous songs, people, bands, and others mentioned in the article. Then, have pairs or small groups use Timeline Infographic Templates, reviewed here, to summarize their reading. At this point, students could do a little research on a person or band mentioned in the article and report their findings to their peers using Genially, reviewed here.
