This online tutorial walks students through DNA basics, the cell cycle, and the process of mitosis. Each step of cell division is introduced with a brief description and illustration. Includes a short animation of mitosis, review quiz, and vocabulary list. Though the mitosis animation requires Flash, nothing else does. There is a lot to learn here through text, diagrams and quizzes.

In the Classroom

Before using this site, you may want to assess what students know about cells, DNA, and mitosis. Put together an assessment asking about basic information using a tool like Survey Anyplace, reviewed here, where you can use a variety of formats including multiple choice, open-ended, images, and more. Then have students preview the first exercise for words they don't know and create flashcards using Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. After completion of the exercise, ask students to reflect on their learning using Flip, reviewed here. Flip allows students to share video responses through collaborative comments and discussions. Require students to comment on at least 3 other students learning reflections. Be sure you've coached students in proper discussion etiquette whether online or in class.

Reinforce the parts of a cell with this interactive tour. Students can click on an area of the virtual cell, read a brief definition, zoom in or out, and perform certain functions - cutting, splitting, and rotating. The pronunciation guide will "speak" the words for you.

In the Classroom

Have students create flashcards for the words they don't know using Flashcard Stash, reviewed here. After completion of the tour, ask students to reflect on their learning by writing a blog entry using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This site offers an introduction to three areas of bioology: cells, microbes, plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, and animal systems, along with a set of study materials. Though the concepts are "real science," the language is approachable and interesting enough to keep students engaged. This site is well worth a look for use as either a self-study or a resource to accompany an introduction to biology.

In the Classroom

This site will compliment your study of cells. Use it as an introduction or review. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students explore this site independently or in pairs. If used independently put the site on a classroom computer and use as a center. To use in pairs, bring students to the lab or use a classroom set of laptops. This site would also be a good one to add to your class webpage or blog for use at home. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Visme, reviewed here.

Find great animations of ATP synthase, the electron transport chain, protein modification, photosystems, photosynthesis, transcription, and more. Use the navigation on the left hand side to choose between "Cellular Processes" and "Molecular Processes." Find descriptions for many of the animations on the front page along with a direct link.

In the Classroom

Use this free site for greater differentiation among learners in the Biology classroom. Use these animations at any point in a unit of study in Cell Biology. Use animations (on your projector or interactive whiteboard) as much of the content is very difficult for many students to grasp. Use animations with students summarizing the process in their own words for later review. Create a study guide that follows the processes and asks important points. Use the animations to create a vocabulary list to provide ahead of time to become familiar with the difficult language of Biology. Challenge students to create flashcards (with the key vocabulary words) using a site such as Quizlet, reviewed here.
