If you are not familiar with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), learn about them through the resources in this collection. The SDGs are the 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations designed to be a blueprint for achieving a more sustainable future for all. In this collection, you will find helpful information about the SDGs and web resources to help you to teach the SDGs in your lessons. There are resources included for all grade levels.

Promote environmental citizenship through this site's "green learning" units. The curriculum ranges from examining how electricity works, understanding the balance of ecosystems, to a high school unit on sustainable futures. Enjoy the interactive wind turbine and carbon calculator. The animation for grades 4 - 7 is engaging, and the video presentations for high school students on sustainability is powerful. Green Learning provides educators with an array of hands-on activities, online learning opportunities, printable materials, assessment tools, and valuable resources such as environmental experts to contact. Each environmental concept taught provides opportunities for real world learning, encourages social action, and advocacy. Teacher friendly planning tools can help meet instructional time constraints, students learning styles, and promote cross-curricular connections. The site is free but requires registration. Membership provides access to additional educational materials and a monthly newsletter. This program comes to us from Canada.

In the Classroom
The e-Card project series (found under Programs) invites students to research a topic, write a persuasive letter to an individual they believe makes decisions that effect environment, then design and create an e-Card. Have your students share their work on the e-Cards website and view what other students have created.There is a range of lessons and activities here, some more complex than others. You may want to choose a few that fit your curricular needs and then allow small groups of students to investigate one together. Have student groups make an online Blabberize, reviewed here, of things they discover about their topic, and later rearrange the items to "explain" their topic to classmates visually. Blabberize is a photo editing tool that creates talking animations from a photo or other image.

Use this resource as basic information about the use and impacts of coal along with other resources to debate and gain a balanced overview. Use this site with sites about other resources used for heating to determine the different advantages and disadvantages of each resource. Use writings, letters to the editor, or blog posts to discuss opinions about the use of energy resource. Create a conventional or online display of information found. Have students research specific topics found at this site and create a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Integrate clean air technology into your physical science units. Re-Energy.ca highlights five basic forms of renewable energy; solar electricity and heat, wind power and energy, and biomass energy. All the necessary background information needed to better understand renewable energy and with a list of valuable links, resources and videos. Included are detailed construction plans for renewable energy models such as a solar oven or wind turbine. The site also addresses larger environmental issues such as global climate change and is dedicated to educating the public on ways to reduce the consumption of natural resources.

In the Classroom
The projects outlined are in simple steps to show students how to create their own renewable energy technologies. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get hands on experience with engineering, design, and sustainable energy technologies. It also could be a resource for science fair projects.If you live in Canada, you can participate in a solar oven design challenge. Teachers from other countries may want to have their class host an on-line collaborative project to compare and contrast the performance of their home made solar ovens
The website provides a unit plan meant to be completed in 11 class periods. You can download free complete lesson plans with detailed instructions. A student planning worksheet outlines research procedures, project guidelines, timeline for completion dates and evaluation criteria they are expected to meet.

In the Classroom
Identify similarities and differences in water issues around the globe. Have cooperative learning groups create online Venn Diagrams comparing two distinct areas and their water issues. Use an online tool such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here.Students can choose an area or topic of interest either individually or as a group. Look at water issues that many students may not be aware of including water quality and distribution. Create a campaign to increase water awareness that may or may not coincide with world water week (or day.) Have students create a video or podcast sharing their campaigns. For podcasts, use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here. If creating videos, use a tool like FlexClip, reviewed here, where you can add music and the computer microphone to make comments, explain, etc. Share them on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here.
Use these resources to determine how to help other countries in their need for clean water and how everyone can conserve.

In just a few short years, blogging has become one of the fastest growing means of Internet communication. This site represents a collection of bloggers whose interests focus on developing countries. These international blogs and blogs about international issues give an authentic voice to areas of the world where that voice is often suppressed or unrecognized. The site is a combination of blogs that have been collected and translated and are presented on the site itself and links to offsite blogs. The entries can be searched by region, by country, or by topic. Additionally, there is a cadre of authors sponsored directly by Global Voices itself to comment on and recommend blogs and bloggers from their geographic areas of expertise.
Be aware that many school districts' web filters exclude blogs, but the entries that are posted directly to the site itself may be more accessible. You should monitor student use regularly, however, as blogs represent the opinions and feelings of their writers and may not always be suitable for classroom use.

In the Classroom
Many social studies classes feature long term projects or units on diverse countries, and this site is a goldmine of information about places that can be difficult to research. Share the blog entries on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Why not have students create a video highlighting what they have learned about their country (or other topic? By signing up for a free membership, high school students have an opportunity to enter a network of students from around the world. Even without a membership, students can find basic information about countries of the world, articles relevant to international youth, and opportunities to learn about projects being undertaken by youth to support social justice and humanitarian concerns. Be sure to click Youth Resources on the top menu to find Action Guides for global problems to solve and Commit to Act. A membership to the offerings of this site is a wonderful open door to tolerance and world awareness for young people around the globe. After signing up, members can also have a classroom platform for use in developing collaborative projects, and see sections for educators.

Get involved in real-world water conservation issues, investigate STEM careers in science and engineering, and meet scientists and engineers from those disciplines. Also, watch Youth in Action videos where young people work for positive change. Expeditions are designed around conserving water with titles such as Water by Design, Shell Shocked, Beyond the Dead Zone, Into the Dead Zone, and Plastic Seas. Also, find many Educator Resources that can be filtered by grade level, Program (Food, Toxins, Energy, Marine Debris, and several others), and media type (Videos, Lesson Plans, Worksheets, etc.). EarthEcho was Founded by Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau, grandchildren of Jacques Yves Cousteau, in honor of their father Philippe Cousteau, Sr. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Show students how to combat the global water crisis starting with their communities. Immerse students in hands-on, inquiry projects with these expeditions, or use the lesson plans and videos. Introduce them on an interactive whiteboard or projector and select a class project to complete. List the choices on Dotstorming, reviewed here, for students to comment and vote. Once students have launched into the expedition or lesson plan, ask them to keep a journal about what they are learning using Penzu, reviewed here, with Penzu you can add images or your own artwork as illustrations. Be sure to bookmark these expeditions and lesson units for future use. For students who are interested in pursuing a career in STEM allow them time to review Cabinet of Curiosities, reviewed here.
