This site offers all information on World Maths Day, usually held in March. World Maths Day has taken place each year since 2007. They plan to add science challenges. Students play at home and at school against other students around the world in live games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play up to 100 games, earning points for their personal tally. The students who answer the most questions correctly appear on the Hall of Fame. There are 5 different levels of play, 20 games on each level. All participants receive a digital certificate of achievement. Site resources include teacher and student quick launches, technical guides, and printable posters for the classroom.

This site provides a scientific calculator and standard calculator that can be displayed on an interactive whiteboard/projector or embedded into a website or blog. The calculator has a dropdown box to display the recent history of calculations which may be useful to retrieve recent problems. To embed the calculator into a blog or website, find the "widget" link in the top, right-hand portion of the website. After clicking the link, copy and paste the code to embed the calculator horizontally, vertically, or with a minimal (just standard calculator) display.

Display the calculator on your interactive whiteboard or projector when working through problems or checking class homework. Display on the interactive whiteboard and have a student "Vanna White" model new procedures on the IWB as others work problems at their seats. (The class can "bump" Vanna if he/she makes an error!) Have students practice this tool at an interactive whiteboard center or sidebar. Embed the widget on your class blog or website for students to have any-time access to a scientific or standard calculator. Display on your interactive whiteboard/projector and play "beat the calculator" - assign a problem and play to see if students can solve the problem mentally before the answer appears on the calculator.

This is an extensive collection of ready to go, teacher-made SMART Notebook activities. This collection covers all grade levels and subject areas. Click Elementary, Middle School, Jr. High, or High School to find the many (MANY) resources). The topics vary greatly and the quantity is impressive. You must have Smart Board software installed on your computer to open these files. Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.)

In the Classroom

These lessons are great for the new SMART Board user or the seasoned pro. Use these if you need a lesson but don't have time to create one from scratch. View the lessons and use them to help you create your own lesson. Click the different tabs to view the different grade levels. Please note that all of these activities require SMART Notebook software (which comes with SMART brand IWBs). Don't have SMART brand IWB's? Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.) If you use a lesson, go to the staff directory under District Information -> Email Directory and send the creator a thank you. Think how great it would be to receive an email from a teacher "out there" thanking YOU for sharing?

Understand basic math and algebra, as well as advanced math topics like calculus and statistics. These free CliffsNotes articles can help when you're doing math homework and taking math tests. Articles begin with Algebra 1 and basic math skills and continue through Statistics and Trigonometry. Each article gives a written overview of the topic along with diagrams and charts. Each also contains a link on how to cite the article. Resources also include glossaries for Pre-Agebra, Geometry, and Statistics. Although the site is set up as a supplement to the familiar Cliff Notes books available as study guides, these materials are free and useful as resources in the math classroom. This site does include some unobtrusive advertisements.

Create your own motivational posters easily and simply. Choose a random picture (one from Flickr or Facebook) or use one already on your computer. Choose colors and other options as well as the type of text to be used. Enter your text and preview the result. Once complete, save to Flickr, your computer, or print. Remember you can use a saved image in PowerPoint shows and on a class wiki, as well as blogs and other sites.

Make sure students are aware of copyright laws. Use this site to encourage proper use of photographs that students have the authorization to use. Model including appropriate photo credits on the posters. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.

Younger students can use this tool together as a whole-class activity or simply enjoy the posters their teacher creates. Have students create a picture about a unit topic with a caption using new terms learned. For example, create posters about predators and prey or classifications of animals. Students can create a poster of a study skill or learning activity that helps them learn. Create a caption that explains how the student learns the best. Every subject area can use this resource to create interesting presentation posters for display or as springboards to talk about what was learned. For example, in Biology, students could create a poster about a cell part with a clever caption about the importance of the job. In Literature or History, students can create posters about the perspectives of others in the story or at that time of history. Rather than a traditional research project, have cooperative learning groups use this site to show their knowledge in any subject area. Ask students to apply concepts such as constitutional rights by illustrating them in poster images with captions. Teachers can create bulletin board images, as well. Have a classroom motivation poster competition to start off the school year! Share the winners on your class wiki or in a PowerPoint presentation at back to school night/open house. As special occasions approach, have students bring in or take a digital picture they can make into a poster as a family gift with their own inspirational saying. Create a portfolio of 6 word stories, utilizing a powerful picture and 6 words to demonstrate the concept that was learned. Assign students the task of placing their project on a blog with a larger explanation of their understanding of the concept used in the picture.

Problems adapt to the skill of the person answering problems, grade levels cannot be increased until 5 correct problems in a row have been solved. The tests concentrate on understanding, spatial reasoning, and problem solving rather than math rules and theorems.

This site contains many visual explanations of Math topics including interactive practice activities. Each explanation begins with a definition of the topic (such as adding or subtracting fractions), then moves on to practicing the skill with the interactive pieces. Practice activities at the end of each topic are very visually appealing and will appeal to most students. One of the most useful portions of the site is the glossary which contains definitions of many Math terms along with examples of the terms in use.

tag(s): charts and graphs (168), fractions (159), integers (22), puzzles (143), statistics (114)

In the Classroom

This site would be useful for students to practice skills already learned; however, the explanations are not in-depth enough for beginning to learn concepts. Create a link on classroom computers or in the computer lab to use as practice. Use the glossary as a resource on your interactive whiteboard or projector when definitions are needed for math terms. Provide a link on your class website or blog to the glossary for students to access at home. Display the site on your interactive whiteboard, choose a subject such as adding/subtracting fractions, then click the link titled "topic" and choose the final item in the sequence - in this instance it is an activity called The Small Flood. These activities are perfect for whole-class practice in each subject.

KenKen is similar to Soduku; however, it has the added complication of requiring number combinations (using operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to fit within bolded boxes. The site has an excellent illustrated tutorial on how to play the game located at the "How to Play" link. Teachers can sign up for the free newsletter and receive free puzzles. There are several free puzzles on the site. Math lovers have been known to celebrate the Joys of Pi, and this website offers many opportunities for celebration! The site is based on David Blatner's book of the same name; however, it contains many links and resources for learning about Pi. The most in-depth portion is the links section which contains a long list of Pi links around the web such as Pi History, Pi Mysteries, and Fun with Pi. Who knows, you may want to follow the link to purchase a Pi tie!

Caution: there is a link to American Pi which is a spoof on the movie, American Pie, and may contain some adult themes.

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. A good activity for this introduction is to complete the matchstick activity as a class (you could have students or small groups of students draw their answer on an index card to show you). Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Enhance student learning by asking teams to report back on interesting Pi facts or information found using a video explanation tool like Flip, reviewed here. Flip provides a tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Include The Joy of Pi site with your Pi Day celebrations!

This site is part of the Mathtrain.com Project and was created to host student-created math video lessons all in one place. It was created by Mr. Marcos and his students at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA. Videos are searchable by topic or by most viewed, most recent, or most discussed. The site is highly interactive and has an option to subscribe to their free podcast through ITunes. In addition to the student-created videos, there are also teacher-created videos with explanations on different math topics. Most videos are under 2 minutes in length making them perfect to use for introduction or review with different math topics. This site runs in conjunction with mathtrain.com.

Choose a student-created video to use as an introduction for a new math topic. For example, when working with multi-step equations, show one of the student's videos on the site on your interactive whiteboard as an example of how one student solved the problem. Use this as a springboard to classroom discussions on problem solving equations. There are several videos on the site with this topic, so a new video can be shown each day as examples of different problem solving methods. Use the student examples in your classroom to demonstrate how students can explain different math topics, then create your own explanatory video or audio presentations. Have students create podcasts using a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here. Or challenge students to create a video and share using a site such as SchoolTube, reviewed here. Post student work to your classroom website or blog for students to use at home for review.

Different ways to create the diagrams are provided by choosing one or two circles and choices of circle placement. In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Ask students to create their own Venn Diagram and have other students guess the rule. Consider using a site such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here). Use the site to demonstrate Venn Diagrams that might be used with different subjects: Science - use to sort animals by different characteristics, Social Studies - sort countries by different types of rule over a given time period. The possibilities are endless.

In the Classroom

Introduce the website on your interactive whiteboard or projector by discussing the information on the learner area. Practice inputting information and creating equations as a class and challenge students to create their own equations. Set up the whiteboard at the side of your room for small groups to investigate further. Create a link on your classroom computers to use as a learning station. Provide this link to students on your class website for some additional practice (at home or the lab). Have students create their own sequencing "What comes next?" puzzles for classmates to solve, sharing the questions on a class wiki or in a Google Doc for others to try.
