Try the TeachersFirst interactive Biomes of the World Unit in grades 4-8 to get your students involved and engaged with their own research. Have them work alone or with a partner on laptops or in a lab. Use a webcam with younger students, asking them to observe and record animal behavior as a center on your classroom computer or a whole-class activity on a projector.

The Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah provides a collection of information and other resources on genetics and genetic engineering for students and their teachers. This is a particularly well-organized academic site.

tag(s): dna (44), genetics (76)

In the Classroom

Use this site to help students review a unit on genetics. There are plenty of links that students can access reviewing a number of subjects within genetics. Save the site on your class wiki or web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom. The "tour the basics" link would also be great at the beginning of a unit on genetics to assess what knowledge the students already have, and bring them all up to speed. Any science teacher should save this site and use it frequently in their class!

These resources from the National Human Genome Research Institute offer a series of modules for secondary students that deal with genetics, genome sequencing, and the ethical implications of genetic research and development. Find links to Journals, Resources, and Databases. This material assumes some level of prior experience on the part of both teacher and student. The site also provides a number of links to additional web resources. This is challenging content for faculty and students willing to make the effort. Students will find the glossary, found here, helpful.

tag(s): dna (44), ethics (23), genetics (76), sequencing (17)

In the Classroom

Looking at the map of the all the human chromosomes (GeneMap99) is an interesting way to introduce genetics and tie research into genetic studies in the classroom. Students can investigate the traits of students in the classroom and determine the different variations. Provide a link to this site to determine the chromosome and location on the chromosome for the trait. Find data about the frequency of the different variations in different populations around the world. Use the trait to complete genetic crosses. Do research and create an informational brochure, blog post, website page, or presentation on the findings. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration!

Use this site as a resource during a lesson or unit on acid rain. Have cooperative learning groups explore the site, with the intentions of summarizing the information in a multimedia presentation. Have cooperative learning groups create online books using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Have groups tell the "acid" rain, explaining where and how it happens most. Great for a pre-discussion activity about the efforts to stop acid rain.

The text portions may be challenging, so you should pair weaker readers with a partner as they read. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. They can do this with pen and paper or online. If you want the assignment online, explain to students they need to open a new tab in their browser window and take notes with a tool such as Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. At the bottom of the page there are several topics labeled Read More About Seeing Color. Divide students into small groups to research and take notes for one or more of the topics. Then ask students to share what they learned by creating a simple infographic sharing their knowledge about seeing color using Visme, reviewed here.

This site offers an introduction to three areas of bioology: cells, microbes, plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, and animal systems, along with a set of study materials. Though the concepts are "real science," the language is approachable and interesting enough to keep students engaged. This site is well worth a look for use as either a self-study or a resource to accompany an introduction to biology.

tag(s): animals (280), cells (80), plants (144)

In the Classroom

This site will compliment your study of cells. Use it as an introduction or review. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students explore this site independently or in pairs. If used independently put the site on a classroom computer and use as a center. To use in pairs, bring students to the lab or use a classroom set of laptops. This site would also be a good one to add to your class webpage or blog for use at home. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Visme, reviewed here.
