Explore how the use of infographics as a formative assessment strategy can both engage students and improve learning. This workshop will help you understand what infographics are, what makes them effective, and how powerful they can be when infused into content-area instruction. Infographic creation requires the application of a range of critical skills, such as synthesis, analysis, organization, and creativity. In order to summarize and convey information correctly, clearly, and concisely, students must understand the material and their audience. Join us and learn how to get started using infographics for formative assessment. Participants will: 1. Understand what infographics are and the elements that make them effective; 2. Explore strategies for using infographics to gather evidence of student progress; and 3. Plan for student use of infographics as formative assessment. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

The Academic Word Finder identifies academic vocabulary (tier 2) words found in any text. Register using email to create an account before beginning. Copy and paste any text you want to analyze, (the site recommends starting with two to three paragraphs) and select your grade level. The Word Finder identifies the vocabulary found in the text and provides additional context with grade range, part of speech, meaning, and an example sentence. Email or print the results using links found on the site. Each entry is automatically saved to your Achieve the Core account for future reference.

Visit the Game Library to view and download question files shared by fellow members of Blended Play. Watch the tutorial video shared on Blended Play for complete instructions on creating and using games from the site. The tutorial also comes in PDF format. If your district blocks YouTube, the tutorial video may not be viewable. You could always view the video at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Then find additional standards-based assessments, or create your own, using a tool like Edulastic, reviewed here. Edulastic includes a database of over 20,000 standards-based math questions. Dictionary.com provides much more information than a typical dictionary. Browse the page to find the Word of the Day, grammar tips, and word trends. Find the menu or "hamburger" (3 small lines located at the top-left hand corner of the home page) to translate text into different languages, play games, or read the very interesting blog. Creating an account isn't necessary; however, it allows you to save words as favorites.

In the Classroom
Use this online dictionary instead of printed dictionaries and thesauruses in the classroom. Be sure to share a link to this site on your class website. Display the word of the day on your interactive whiteboard as a lesson starter during writing or language arts lessons. Ask students to include featured words during writing activities using Google Documents, then highlight each time the word is used. Take it a "tech" step further and have students create a word cloud of the important terms they learn from this site using a tool such as WordItOut, reviewed here. Dive even deeper and have students or groups of students create daily video presentations featuring their choice for word of the day (or week) using a tool like Powtoon, reviewed here. In the Classroom
Share problems on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector for use as class starters, or provide a link on your class website for homework. Use the sample sheet provided on this site as an example to create your own student response template using Google Forms, reviewed here. After collecting responses, create a 2-column Padlet, reviewed here, and ask students to share their solution in the appropriate column. Padlet allows users to add comments; turn this feature on and ask students to respond to the solutions provided by their peers. Typely is a free online proofreading tool. In comparison to other grammar checkers, this tool focuses on usage errors instead of grammatical errors. Typely provides feedback on common mistakes including redundancy, sexism, and misspellings among others. Copy and paste your text into the editor to view results. Use settings to change the appearance of your text and use of Typely. When finished, save your document to your computer or create a Typely account to save online.
