A simply-designed site for those who know very little about inclusion. It covers the basic philosophy behind inclusion and the legal requirements for inclusion, plus everything from teacher and administrative strategies to student preparation to financial considerations. There is also a helpful list of other resources which includes books, organizations, and links to sites that carry videos and other helpful materials. A good site to start with if you're not sure where to begin.

AVI is a nonprofit international membership organization that promotes listening and speaking as a way of life for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The auditory-verbal approach helps these children learn in regular classrooms and living environments and to become independent, participating citizens in mainstream society. They offer a newsletter, information on conferences and events, and a chat room. This site is more for parents interested in this approach for their child.

This site is a launch pad for almost any question you can ask about deafness. The links are of the general information variety rather than teacher-oriented, but if you know very little about deafness, this is a fine place to start. Includes feature articles, a chat room and bulletin board, plus recommended books (including children's) and videos (that feature deaf characters, not videos about deafness). One must-visit link: signing dictionaries.

In the Classroom

Share this link with teachers who have a deaf student for the first time and are curious for more information. This site would also be a great research spring board into one of the many conditions that cause deafness. If students are working on a research project, refer them to the site in their quest to narrow their topic or to garner general information.
