Lincoln Lesson Idea: Musical Adventures

Abraham Lincoln

Level - Elementary - Middle School - High School

Subjects - Music, Social Studies, History, Government, Geography

Objectives:
Students will compare music from the 19th century with the music of today.

Activity:
Try The American Civil War Homepage to find a hotlist of links, including music from the 19th century. Share some of the music from the Civil War times. Students may be surprised that they already know some of these famous songs. Ask students to find contemporary music that they believe will last for over a hundred years into the future as good examples from life in the 21st century. Talk about what makes music popular for years to come. Share an in-class music fest of "classics from yesterday and today."

Tips:
You may want to make some "rules" about which songs are appropriate to share in school.
