In this unit, students will discover the actual human behind the famous name Maya Angelou. The unit has three parts: Tough Beginnings - Maya as a child and teenager, Talent to Spare - Maya as a young adult and her early career, and More than Words - Inspiration. Many students may not know that she was the first African American streetcar conductor in San Francisco and a singer and songwriter. Part three, More Than Words: Inspiration, has a timeline from 1971-2008 and colorful images of her later in life. The last two parts of the unit find four discussion questions called Think Piece. At the bottom of the landing page are three different word activities. You will need to have a free Kids Discover membership to access this unit.

In the Classroom
This unit is geared for 5th-6th grade readability (Lexile level 750-890). Introduce your students to this unit on your interactive whiteboard or a projector. The first part, Tough Beginnings, is very interesting, describing that Maya didn't speak for five years and why. Once you get through that part and the Think Piece that goes with it, let students read the rest in pairs or small groups. For the Think Piece(s), create a class Google Jamboard, reviewed here, where students can record their answers and include sticky notes and images. The website offers engaging and informative videos explaining compound word formation. In addition to the videos, the website also provides a variety of fun and interactive activities, such as quizzes and writing exercises, that help reinforce the material and build vocabulary. The website is designed to be easy to navigate and provides a friendly interface for students and teachers.
In the Classroom
As you watch the video with your class, pause to ask questions. Consider using Binumi, reviewed here, to pause and add your questions automatically. Then take the easy or hard quiz together to assess understanding. Next, your students can apply their knowledge by using the printable writing prompt to write about getting ready for school, then identifying compound words in their writing. The "Word Play" activity is also an engaging way for students to share their knowledge. Students explore compound words further by drawing, writing, and acting them out. Create engaging and informative timelines with the many different template options provided by Venngage. After creating an account, select the link offered to the templates. Within the templates, find infographics and then timelines. Scroll down the page to choose from the options that include timeline options for many different subjects and formats. Hover over any thumbnail to view a larger preview, then select create to view and modify the template. When using the timeline creator for the first time, take advantage of the quick tutorial walkthrough that shares features available for members. Next, use the dashboard to edit and add text, icons, charts, maps, and more. When finished, select the share button to publish your document to the web and access the public link of your timeline. Free plans allow members to create five designs, share them publically, and upload up to six images.

Use timelines for various classroom activities beyond just sequences of dates and times. For example, engage students in retelling stories by asking them to create timelines that share the series of events or locations found within a novel. Ask students to create a timeline of the growth of plants or step-by-step procedures of a lab experiment. Castbox provides tools for creating and sharing podcasts. First, create a free account, then begin by entering the Creator Studio. Next, select the upload icon to drag and drop your media file in a supported format of up to 400M. When the file begins uploading, complete the areas provided to include basic information for your files, such as a title, description, and publication date and time. Castbox also offers an option to upload an image for your cover design. When finished, select Publish to complete the creation of your podcast. Finally, click on your podcast to listen and share using the link or social media links provided.

In the Classroom
Castbox is an excellent podcast-sharing option for simple podcasts or when sharing audio recordings that have already been edited, for example, using editing tools on your computer. Create regular or special podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki. Are you looking for even more ideas? Record class assignments or directions. Record story time or a reading excerpt for younger ones to listen to at a computer center AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning and build fluency by recording selected passages for your non-readers. Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Challenge students to create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News," encourage and extend learning and have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Invite students to write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. World language students or beginning readers could record their fluency by reading passages. Allow parents to hear their child's progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Challenge your Shakespeare students to record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father's or Mother's Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini-casts without needing any additional tools. Poll Maker makes it easy to create and share polls in just a few seconds without requiring registration. Add your question and response choices in the blanks provided; options allow you to find and add images to both the question and the responses if desired. Additional tabs provide options for selecting and customizing a theme and personalizing settings. Setting options include security features, multiple answers as responses, and selections to hide or show results. Advanced settings allow you to set the start and end dates of polls. When ready to share your poll, copy and share the link, copy and paste the embed code onto a website, or invite users to your poll via email. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to create and manage additional polls and view hidden results.

In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this handy site for many different classroom uses. Engage students when introducing a new topic by creating a poll to assess learning quickly or find students' interest in a topic. Use a poll as an exit ticket or as a formative assessment. Enhance learning by adding a link to a poll as part of a blended or flipped learning activity. For example, when delivering a flipped learning lesson using Microsoft Forms, reviewed here, include a link to a poll that asks students to reflect upon their understanding of the content learned. Extend learning by sharing the Poll Maker with students and asking them to conduct polls to gather information when learning about graphing. Curipod creates interactive lessons using AI (artificial intelligence) technology. Tasks include features for making word clouds, adding polls, questions, and more. Visit the Discover link to browse through ready-to-use templates or create an account, then copy and edit a lesson using a template or build one in just a few seconds using your prompt and instructions. When creating a new lesson, start with a blank slide or use templates that include a brain break, exit ticket, multiple choice, or complete lesson. For new tasks, add a topic and include standards if desired. Another option allows you to import PowerPoint presentations and PDFs when creating new activities. When ready, share lessons with students using the provided QR code or the join code for students to access at curi.live. View statistics in your dashboard, including the number of times played and player results. Free accounts currently include unlimited players, five private Curipods, a shared workspace, and all core features.

Use Curipod as a starting point for creating lessons and student activities, then modify the content to fit your curriculum and student abilities and needs. Copy and paste standards when creating a lesson as a starting point to add content for the lesson. When using any AI technology, verify the information provided is accurate before sharing it with students. Use Curripod as a flipped or blended learning activity, share the join code with students, and ask them to complete the activities within a designated period before reviewing together as a class. Easily modify any template to differentiate instruction for different groups of students. For example, when introducing decimals, provide a basic introduction with vocabulary and instructional content to one group of students but add more challenging content, such as adding decimals for students already familiar with this topic. Novel Effect is a magical and engaging storytelling application currently available for Chromebooks and as an Apple or Google Play app. As you read any of the included stories, Novel Effect responds to your voice and adds accompanying music and sound effects to create an interactive experience for readers and listeners. Titles are added weekly to the growing library. In addition to the storytelling portion of the site, Novel Effects offers free, downloadable book activities for all users, even those without a subscription. Visit the resources to select book activities, search for titles, and browse by keyword or category. Select the download link to view the activities as a PDF, then print. Free accounts offer up to five monthly stories and access to book activities.

In the Classroom
Even if access to a paid subscription is not an option, take advantage of the many free book activities in your classroom with many popular book titles. Use the option to access five free titles monthly to engage students by sharing a story read using Novel Effect, then discuss the features that bring the stories to life, such as music, animal sounds, etc. Encourage students to use these storytelling features as models when they read aloud. Use the included reading activities to guide interactive activities for students to complete at home or as part of computer workstations. For example, some activities ask students to complete matching activities as a cut-and-paste lesson. Instead of using a paper worksheet, recreate the activities and add additional vocabulary or information to a Google Jamboard, reviewed here, then share the link for students to complete. Find many free templates at Ditch That Textbook, reviewed here. Ask students to record and share stories with their novel effect additions, then share their videos on your class website. If you don't have a class website, easily create one with Google Sites, reviewed here.

A preview is available to show any changes to the quality of the image when reducing the size. The information above the picture also indicates the original file size and the file size after compressing the image. When ready, select download to save the compressed image to your device.

TARA is a suite of teacher utility tools created with special education teachers in mind but with support systems available for all teachers, coaches, and principals. Free plans include a lesson planner, strategy and resource bank, and a personalized homepage to access files, bookmarks, and action items easily. Your homepage has a to-do list to add action items to your calendar and view your schedule, a notepad for jotting down reminders, and access to the resource bank that includes 100s of classroom activities, organizers, and more. The Teacher Dashboard is the area to view upcoming lessons and review feedback. Visit the Classes page to add students, classes, collaborators, and co-teachers.

TARA is worth a look at by all educators, even if it isn't used for lesson planning and calendar notifications, because of the easy access to the robust resource bank.
