GCF Learn Free offers a large selection of topics, lessons, videos, and more designed to offer training in essential skills needed to live and work in the 21st century. Registration isn't required; however, it allows users to save progress within courses. Topics range from technology basics, software training, career planning, and much more. Learn Free also has links to information for educators, including Teachers Guides and Resources and Tools.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of these free courses to brush up your computer and technology skills. Share links to specific tutorials with students for use with classroom projects. For example, share the Google Docs course with students to help them learn how to use and manage Google Drive, documents, and complete basic tasks. Be sure to share tips with parents too for their personal use. Consider sharing a section of a course each week on your website for students to learn about various tools in bite-sized pieces. For a more immersive learning experience, use TES Teach Blendspace, reviewed here to create a learning path for students that includes information from this site along with YouTube videos, quizzes, and links to other learning resources. Extend student learning further by asking them to create their tutorials based on class needs. Capella University offers over 20 free online professional development courses for educators. Select courses from a variety of topics: Implementing Technology, Course Design, Developing Best Practice to Become a Leader or Coach, and others. Self-guided classes offer flexibility to complete requirements on any device and within a self-chosen timeline. Select any offered course to view download the Student Guide and Course Syllabus. Successful completion of each course earns 25-50 clock hours of professional development certification at no cost. Although not necessary, you do also have the option to apply hours earned during the courses toward Capella University credits for $50 per credit.

Feedly is a news aggregator that lets you curate, organize, and share the content of your favorite sites in one place. Create an account to begin, then follow the directions to add content to your feed. Organize information by creating and labeling feeds by topic. Links within items in your feed offer options to share by email or on Twitter and other social networking sites. Additional options allow you to change the view of feeds by title, magazine, or cards. Fine-tune your feed by adding filters to hide unwanted topics or keywords, or select items to save for reading at a later time.

In the Classroom

Use Feedly in the classroom in a variety of ways. Create a feed with your professional resources, including favorite classroom websites, professional learning sites, and the latest educational news. Share this feed with your peers to use during professional development sessions. For older students, create a feed with information about your current learning topics. For example, when teaching about climate change and conservation, create a feed to share with students containing information from a variety of sources. Ask students to use this information during their research to learn about this topic from a broader viewpoint. As you and your students find articles of importance, save them within a Wakelet, reviewed here. Use Wakelet to create different collections based on specific topics. As a final project, ask students to share their learning by creating a Wakelet collection that includes articles found on Feedly along with their final research presentation.

Zapier helps you organize and manage your workflow between apps through automated tasks. Create an account and use the guide to find and choose apps you use. Zapier integrates with a multitude of apps, including Dropbox, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, as well as many other online tools. Connect two or more apps to create an automated action. Choose to create a Zap to select an app and an event. For example, select your Gmail account and create a path to save all Gmail attachments to your Google Drive automatically. Be sure to check out the "Recommended for You" options for an overview of the many ways to organize the workflow between apps.
