This article includes background information about Ancient Greek civilizations and history from the Mycenaean civilization through the end of the Hellenistic civilization when the Romans annexed Greece in 146 BCE, ending Greece's independent rule Roman Empire in 146 BCE. Following the background information is a list of activities that engage students in learning about the first Olympics and comparing them to modern-day Olympics, a link for 10 Fun Olympic Games for Kids, and four videos. Additional resources include extension activities. Content on this site includes correlations to ISTE and AASL standards.

Time Graphics Timeline Creator offers tools to create interactive timelines that include video, images, and maps. Create an account to begin building a timeline. Locate a date on the timeline, then choose to add a new event. After adding an event, on the dashboard, accept the default title or change it, add information, including a description, beginning and ending dates, and more. Other options in the dashboard include settings to change the look of the marker on the timeline. Although there are other options, the free account only allows saving timelines as public. After saving a timeline, use the provided URL to share or copy the embed code to include on a website or blog. To see an example of a timeline that includes many features available, take a look at this History of Civilization found here, or view the Editor's choices to see a variety of styles.

It may take some time for you to become comfortable with creating a timeline with this product. Share with students to allow them to explore the different options, then ask them to become the teachers creating and using this tool in various ways. Although this article is short, it has many possibilities for use to introduce debate and discussion about the role of the Olympics in international politics. Share the article with students to read at home or independently at school before the start of the Olympics. Gather student comments and reactions to the article using an online bulletin board like Lino, reviewed here. As the winter Olympics progress, ask students to share articles reinforcing or reputing the president's view on a blogging site such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Instead of just viewing daily information, involve your classroom by creating your own spreadsheets to record and view medal counts by nation, athletes, and sports. Take this a step further by converting your spreadsheet into a more visual table format using Tableizer, reviewed here. Incorporate the Winter Olympics into your social studies lessons to learn more about the participating nations. Use Google Maps to locate countries, then have students create an Image Annotator, reviewed here, to share information about that country including population information, athletes, sports represented, and geography. This site is dedicated to the history of health and medicine, and the oldest examples go back two thousand years. Everything is available under Creative Commons licensing. Browse the collection through the galleries or search by keyword. The titles of the galleries are Explore, Favourites, Science, History, Art (for Schools), and Galleries. Under each title, find several categories such as Olympics, Health, World, Pathogens, Cell Division, DNA, Vaccines, Surgery (Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Modern), Aids Posters, Patterns and Texture, and many more. The site was created in the UK, so some of the spellings may differ from those in American English.

In the Classroom
Bookmark this site to use as a resource during the Olympic games to find information on scheduled events and venues. Share the Paralympics portion of the site as part of your unit on disabilities. Have students create timelines of the Olympic Games (with music, photos, videos, and more) using Timeline JS, reviewed here. Have students use facts from this site to make Bingo cards, or board games for small groups to enjoy. Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on values on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Ask your students to visit the site and create a multimedia presentation about teamwork. Have students make a mash-up using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge Tools reviewed here. Have students use Fakebook, reviewed here, to create a "fake" page similar in style to Facebook about any of the Olympic athletes past or present.

A picture is worth a thousand words; a map with information is worth many thousands more. The World Atlas map powered by Esri is unique with its many layers of information. Layers include temperature data, habitats, volcano locations, natural resources, and more. The map uses street view and high detail aerial maps. Zoom into any aspect of the Earth, regardless of political boundaries (thanks to NASA, the World Bank, and Spotzi data). Browse from a variety of themes available including animals, temperatures, and tectonic plates. Use the search bar to zoom in to a specific area. Several tools are available along the top including a measuring tool.

In the Classroom
Use Spotzi to make information more relevant and meaningful when paired with an actual map. Find trends easily. Have students choose a topic and investigate maps to identify and develop general statements from the data. Ask students to generate questions to further research the topic.
