Fakebook - Class Tools
Grades
6 to 12This site includes advertising.
tag(s): book reports (24), creative writing (98), social networking (76)
In the Classroom
This site is wonderful for creating interest in many subjects. It is perfect for the Social Studies classroom, instead of a typical biographical report have students create a Fakebook page for their assignment. Write about presidents, founding fathers, famous scientists or artist, a civil war soldier and much more. Have students create a timeline of any historical event. Use Fakebook to outline the plot of a book, play, or film, then share with students while studying the material. Use Fakebook to study literature, create a page for the central character, book's author, or the setting of the book or play. For a unique twist is science class, create a Fakebook page for a periodic element or another science topic. Use the page to describe "the life" of that atom or element. The possibilities within the classroom are endless (as is the creativity and motivation)! In World language classes, have students do this activity (about themselves) in the second language they are learning. Create a Fakebook page for the first day of school to introduce yourself to students or at Open House for parents. Challenge students to create and share a page about themselves during the first week of school. Share a Fakebook page with students to demonstrate proper netiquette and social sharing.Be sure to share a rubric with students for all expectations of what should be included on their page.Edge Features:

You Are Your Words - The American Heritage Dictionary
Grades
K to 12tag(s): characterization (13), descriptive writing (19), images (161)
In the Classroom
You Are Your Words would be a great getting-to-know-you activity. At the beginning of the year, a You Are Your Words bulletin board or classroom display would be a fun way for everyone to get to know each other. This site could lead to really interesting discussions about the power that our words have, what they reveal about us, and how they impact people's perception of us.You Are Your Words would also be a great way for students to create a mini biography about a hero, person of interest, historical figure, etc. Students could upload a picture and include famous quotes or words that describe the person. Students can create character description cards with words, quotes and phrases that describe fictional characters in the reading they are doing. If you have a class or small group that is reading the same book, each student can choose a character to do this for. Have them create "trading cards" of the characters that students can share with each other so that each student has a card for each character in the book. If students are doing an author study, they could create a "You Are Your Words" about the author.
As students are learning about different roles within government, they could create a You Are Your Words image about each position using a picture of the person who holds that position in government. The writing could be related to the job description for the position.
Don't stick to just images of people - upload images of any object or animal and include describing words or emotions connected with the object as part of a poetry project or for vocabulary development. What a great tool for poetry month! Have elementary students make gifts for holidays using this tool. They can write about mom or dad or about what family means to them.

Make an Animation - ABCya!
Grades
2 to 8This site includes advertising.
tag(s): animation (43), creativity (83)
In the Classroom
This site is useful for both teachers and students. During the first day of school, create a simple animation to share with your class. Highlight information about yourself, class rules, highlights from the year, and more. Create math animations showing different geometric shapes on 2-3 slides (just click to copy a frame, rather than remaking the slide) and giving the students a chance to guess the shape before the answer is provided on the next slide. Challenge students to create their own animations "introducing themselves" to the class. Students could also create animations to demonstrate what they have learned about a piece of literature, a science unit, social studies theme or unit, or more. Save the students' work and share the animations on your interactive whiteboard or projector.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Grades
K to 12tag(s): design (67), drawing (61), graphic design (27), images (161)
In the Classroom
Have students create custom logos to go along with book reports, classroom presentations, and more. They can create logos for themselves (using a screen name or slogan) to include on a class wiki or in other online projects. Create your own classroom logo for use on your class website, wiki or classroom stationary. Display the site on your interactive whiteboard to demonstrate how to use different fonts and colors within the program. Share this tool on your class web page so students can create logos any time. For a first week of school activity, if you have access to multiple computers, have students create individual logos of "taglines"about themselves, such as "Lego master" or "Expert dog trainer" and put them on a class wiki page for others to guess/match identities as a getting to know you activity. Others can offer their guesses using the discussion tab on the wiki page.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Speechable - Enluminari
Grades
K to 12tag(s): comics and cartoons (63), images (161)
In the Classroom
The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Caption the homework directions on your teacher web page. Ask your students to create captions for class photos for all sorts of reasons. Use photos or digital drawings from your classroom, such as pictures taken during any hands-on activity. Have students draw in a paint program, save the file, and then add a caption. Spice up research projects about historic figures or important scientists. Have literary characters "talk" as part of a project. In a government class, add captions to photos explaining politicians' major platform planks during election campaigns. Caption the steps to math problem solving. Even primary students can make captions of an animal talking about his habitat or a "community helper" talking about his/her role. Make visual vocabulary/terminology sentences with an appropriate character using the term in context (a beaker explaining how it is different from a flask?). Students could also take pictures of themselves doing a lab and then caption the pictures to explain the concepts. This would be a great first day project (introducing yourself and breaking the ice). Share the class captions on your class web page or wiki! Leave directions to your class (for when a substitute is there). Use at back to school night to show your humorous side to the parents. Have students make talking photos of themselves as a visual tour of their new classroom for parents attending back to school night.Edge Features:

Getting to Know You Ideas from TeachersFirst - TeachersFirst
Grades
K to 12In the Classroom
Try these activities from TeachersFirst to help you and your students get to know each other early in the school year or for a "fresh start" for a new semester or move-in students.Comments
I love the ideas and activities for helping students get to know each other early on in the new school year. In the Headstart program we focus on parent involvement and I like to do activities that involve the parents and help them to get to know each other as well. The classroom and education experience is so much more successful when everyone is working together: children , families, and teachers.Teresa, FL, Grades: 0 - 1

Who Am I? - Starfall
Grades
K to 3tag(s): vocabulary (288)
In the Classroom
Have students complete the site during center time and print out their Who Am I? books. This is a great site to use on the first day or week of the school year. Mix the books up and pass them around to all of the students. Have each student try to find the person who belongs to the book by matching their characteristics. An alternate version of that activity would be to have students choose a partner and play question and answer games to figure out whose book they are holding. Use this opportunity to explain to young students that they are the authors of their own Who AM I? book.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Word Clouds for Kids - ABCya.com
Grades
K to 3tag(s): speech (83), vocabulary (288)
In the Classroom
This is a great visual tool to use. Take a poll and have your students type their answers into the word cloud builder. Then display on an interactive whiteboard or projector and see which answer was the most popular. Use this site as a way to help students see and memorize text, especially visual learners. Use it also when writing poetry or to "see" themes of repeated words and images. Have students paste in their own writing to spot repeated (and monotonous) language when teaching lessons on word choice. Students will be surprised to see what words appear to be dominant. Have students work in groups to create word posters of vocabulary words with related meanings, such as different ways to say "walk" or "said" and decorate your classroom with these visual reminders of the richness of language.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
