This site offers practice with length, mass, and capacity using metric units. Objectives are included for each topic and can easily be printed from the site. After choosing one of the 3 topics, there are several pages of resources labeled by the name of the activity. Some resources are for interactive whiteboards and others are printable worksheets to accompany whiteboard activities. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English; however, it shouldn't create any problems for students to understand. The background of each of the interactive whiteboard resources AND printable pages has a watermark stamp of "For Evaluation Only" which may be distracting to students; however, the activities and worksheets make it worth ignoring.

This site is ideal for an interactive whiteboard or projector. Have the students open the site and use the whiteboard tools to complete the activities. If the watermark is distracting, you can recreate the activities on your own to use in the classroom. Follow-up a class lesson using the whiteboard resources with one of the printable worksheets included on the site. Be sure to post this link on your class website during a unit on measurement.

If you are looking for many different variations of math puzzles, look here. This site contains many puzzles of all kinds, together with links to other puzzles and mathematical recreation pages. The puzzles are marvelous, though many are a bit hard to understand -- often the author starts talking about a group of puzzles without explaining what the puzzle is. You may also have to work your way through some other random thoughts by the author; however, the puzzles on the page are worth sifting through the page to find them. Puzzles are listed in order of being added to the site, it may be easier to find items by looking on the right-hand side of the page and following the links listed under "Math Games". Activities are listed here by title without any explanation or picture, it would have been easier if they were in alphabetical order; however, this is still easier to find than scrolling through the long page of activities.

This is the official website for the first math museum in the United States, opening in 2012. At the time of this review, this site is in its infancy but certainly shows potential as a wonderful math resource. Currently there are several videos from their "Math Encounters" presentations that help bring math to life. Topics include Symmetry, Art and Illusion, the Geometry of Origami, Geometric Sculpture Barn Raising, and more. One especially interesting portion of the site is Math Monday - a weekly column discussing fun, experiential topics in Mathematics. Previous topics include shadow folds, cut and fold Escher, and pencil star.

Share the site with the art teacher and work together to have students create mathematical art projects.

"Aesthetic computing" is an approach to algebra that focuses on students representing algebraic equations as pictures and stories to increase student involvement and understanding. The goal is to engage students who would benefit through hands-on and visual approaches to learning. The site includes a 5 minute video describing the approach, an introduction to the theory including lesson plans and handouts, and learning outcomes. Lesson plans are divided into Middle School and High School categories. One interesting inclusion to the site is the online chat and group for teachers interested in trying the approach. The group is very small but might be worthwhile to use for networking with others using this approach.

This site offers many opportunities for math exploration for both teachers and students. Although they have a store and ads on the site, much of the site is free and worth a visit. One especially helpful portion of the site is the link to different types of calculators from basic to graphing to mortgage and loan calculators. Students and parents will find the homework section of the site helpful as it is categorized by different topics, then each topic is further divided into sections. For example, under fractions you will find definitions, reducing, adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing. In each of those portions there is a section with a first glance (overview), in-depth, examples, and workout. There is also a unit quiz for each section. Another helpful area of the site is the practice section which offers practice in many different math skills such as square root, percent, and integers. The games section offers practice with critical thinking skills through logic puzzles and games such as chess.
This site includes advertising.
