Culminating Project for a Unit on the Novel The Giver Grades 5 to 9 Lori Farnsworth

This is a lesson plan encompassing three 90-minute lessons as a culmination for the Lowry novel, The Giver. While it was written with 8th graders in mind, it is easily adaptable to any age group that reads this novel. The site includes a lesson outline, objectives, standards addressed, and complete despcription of the lesson which includes groups of students creating powerpoint presentations about the novel to share with other groups.

This is Lois Lowry's official website. Find up-to-date information on Lois Lowry's personal appearances, her new works, etc. It includes her blog, as well as all kinds of links to interesting middle school information and other authors.This is a great site for showing kids how to blog (you can actually read and respond to her personal blogs!). It also gives you a link to a site called "Good Conversations" which are interviews with children and juvenile fiction writer authors, as well as a chance to get a FREE DVD. You can email Lois Lowry or read speeches she has given at various functions.

In the Classroom:
A very worthwhile site if you teach The Giver or any other Lowry book. This site is a sure winner for student author study in small groups or individually, as well. If you want to watch the movie clips that are online, you need flash or Quicktime.

This lesson plan for Lois Lowry’s book emphasizes the concept of ‘resistance to injustice’. The summary is well presented and the lesson begins with vocabulary suggestions and a Quick write task to allow teachers to tap into the student’s existing knowledge. The Research assignments direct students to learn more about resistance efforts in Nazi occupied countries, the tasks do assume a level of student skill. Teachers will be able to use this as a great introduction to WWII curriculum.

The Holocaust can be a difficult subject to teach in the elementary grades. This site, created by Carol Hurst, helps teachers present the topic without focusing on the more inappropriate areas of the subject. The discussion ideas provide important questions about the characters and the activities focus on the time and setting of the book. Teachers will find this a useful entry into a study of the world during World War II.

The Giver - Cyberguide Grades 6 to 8 SCORE

SCORE presents a CyberGuide for Lois Lowry’s thought provoking book about a boy’s life in a ‘perfect’ society. The CyberGuide includes 5 activities with content standards and performance rubics that will encourage students to appreciate the variety and freedom of our lives. The activities ask students to use the Library of Congress to create a personal birthday 3 day history chart, to investigate freedoms globally, and to prepare an outline for their future. The site also has a web link for students to write to the author. Teachers will find this guide to be a direct approach to a complex subject, suitable for all abilities.

The Giver - Lois Lowry Speaks Grades 6 to 8 Random House

Listen to Lois Lowry talk about this riveting book! Random House has put together a great site that begins with a message from the author about the basic concept of this Newberry Medal winner. In The Classroom offers teachers lesson activities that range from pre-reading to interdisciplinary connections involving historical fiction reading comparisons, discussions about ambiguity in writing, the scientific nature of color, and even research into utopian societies past and present. Teachers will find the Web links off beat, but the general lessons are easy to use and will challenge students.

The Giver - Photo Project Grades 6 to 8 Teachers.Net

Teachers.net offers an ‘after reading’ ‘hands on’ activity for Lois Lowry’s unforgettable novel. Students will take black and white photos of objects that are integral to the story, and write a magazine introduction for the photos. Here’s a great easy quick, fun, way to change the regular routine and introduce an activity students will enjoy and remember. This activity is good for students who are more reluctant readers.
