MathLibs offers multiplication practice and short slide presentations on various math strands. Multiplication practice is in the format of a word problem. Before starting the problems, players input several different names based on prompts. The prompts ask for teacher's names, boys and girls names, annoying boys names, etc. (like Mad Libs). These names are then inserted into the word problems to be solved. The slide presentations offer short tutorials on numbers, patterns, measurement, geometry, graphing, and probability.

This site provides lessons with hands-on math using a Mobius strip (or band). Though the site is "plain vanilla," this topic always fascinates students. Directions are included for creating the strips along with a link to printable blackline masters to use. A simple, mathematically important, and wonderfully entertaining two-dimensional object, also known as the Mobius strip, that has only one surface and one edge and is therefore of great interest in topology. It is used in classrooms to develop understanding of surfaces and create mystery. Lessons build upon each other and give stopping points for each grade level. Pictures would have been helpful to demonstrate the activities; however, the site is still useful with providing lessons using the bands. More information on Mobius bands can be found here.

In the Classroom

During the lessons, take digital pictures of the procedures for creating and working with the Mobius bands. Older students can search for examples of Mobius bands used in the real world and create a classroom display.

This site contains many visual explanations of Math topics including interactive practice activities. Each explanation begins with a definition of the topic (such as adding or subtracting fractions), then moves on to practicing the skill with the interactive pieces. Practice activities at the end of each topic are very visually appealing and will appeal to most students. One of the most useful portions of the site is the glossary which contains definitions of many Math terms along with examples of the terms in use.

tag(s): charts and graphs (196), fractions (229), integers (40), puzzles (204), statistics (126)

In the Classroom

This site would be useful for students to practice skills already learned; however, the explanations are not in-depth enough for beginning to learn concepts. Create a link on classroom computers or in the computer lab to use as practice. Use the glossary as a resource on your interactive whiteboard or projector when definitions are needed for math terms. Provide a link on your class website or blog to the glossary for students to access at home. Display the site on your interactive whiteboard, choose a subject such as adding/subtracting fractions, then click the link titled "topic" and choose the final item in the sequence - in this instance it is an activity called The Small Flood. These activities are perfect for whole-class practice in each subject.

This site provides the opportunity to explore Venn Diagrams through the use of shapes. Different ways to create the diagrams are provided by choosing one or two circles and choices of circle placement. With the "Guess the Rule" option, players try to find the rule based on shapes that are allowed into the design. The learner area provides a background on Venn diagrams and how they might be used in everyday living. The instructor area provides printable exploration questions, links to standards, classroom preparation tips, and links to similar resources.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Ask students to create their own Venn Diagram and have other students guess the rule. Consider using a site such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here). Use the site to demonstrate Venn Diagrams that might be used with different subjects: Science - use to sort animals by different characteristics, Social Studies - sort countries by different types of rule over a given time period. The possibilities are endless.
