Created by the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, this site allows you to virtually prepare and embalm a mummy. Begin with instructions for pulling the brain out of the nose, then you remove the body's organs, fill the body with salt, wrap it with linens, and prepare it for the afterlife. Potentially unfamiliar words are highlighted, and clicking on them provides an audio dictionary to teach the meaning. While it's not too graphic, it's just "gross" enough that students will love it.
In the Classroom
Use on an interactive whiteboard or projector, or allow students to do their own individual "embalming" on a classroom or home computer. Create a center using your interactive whiteboard and allow small groups to manipulate the whiteboard and the "life size" mummy. You'll need to provide the context for the activity; the site is simply a chance to virtually prepare a mummy. Share t during a unit on Ancient Egypt. This would be intriguing to do around the Halloween holiday.

All countries that used to be part of Great Britain are the same color; color coding for other former empires indicates the empire's former holdings. Data comes from reliable government and other statistical sources. At the bottom of the page, related charts that may be of interest show: Father's Day around the World, Mother's Day around the World, Halloween Celebrations around the world and more.

In the Classroom
Keep this site in mind as a reference source when students study world cultures or foreign languages. Challenge students to use this site to create research projects about individual (free) nations around the world. Have individual students or cooperative learning groups create a multimedia presentation using a tool such as Mapskip (reviewed here) to create a map of the country they researched (with audio stories and pictures included)!

The Origami Club makes the art of folding paper child's play. The animated video tutorials and printable directions take the guesswork out of making origami. There is a wide variety of directions for creating animals, creatures, food, holiday gifts, and accessories. The site also includes printable origami paper, links to other origami sites and new designs each month. There are some minor advertisements at this site.
In the Classroom
Learn about the culture of Japan, geometry, and art with Origami. Use these video tutorials to create clever objects for holiday gifts while teaching mathematical principals about 2D and 3D figures, line, area, perimeter, and planes. Demonstrate how to create an origami object by projecting the site's animated videos directions. Stop and pause the video as students follow along. Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers so students can practice paper folding independently. Afterward, discuss the benefits of oral, visual, or animated directions. Ask students to describe the folding process with geometric terms such as fractional parts, symmetry, faces, edges, rotations, lines, triangle, angles, and shapes. Consider having students use a variety of multimedia presentation platforms to publish their personal version of directions. Have students create multimedia presentations that add narration to each fold with Voicethread reviewed here. Alternatively, share video directions on SchoolTube reviewed here or TeacherTube reviewed here. Have cooperative learning groups create podcasts demonstrating how to create origami with sites such as PodOmatic (reviewed here).

Scroll to the wonderful Shockwave file version hosted right on this blog and to several other virtual pumpkin links below it. Go far beyond "mouse practice" to creative designs. You may be tempted to purchase several real pumpkins to try out the designs you work out here.

Share these sites as part of pumpkin day at your school as you count and graph pumpkin seeds in math class, prepare pumpkin recipes in science, and write pumpkin stories. Save the mess and make a virtual pumpkin carving station on an interactive whiteboard or projector as part of a Fall Festival. Take a screen shot of your "best" pumpkin to accompany student writing on your class blog. On Windows, press the PrntScrn key to COPY your screen, then PASTE it into a document. You will want to use the crop tool to eliminate stuff around the edges. On a Mac, it's shift+command+4 to get a tool you use to select the portion of your screen to "screenshot." Then use the image file saved on your desktop as your illustration. You might even want to make a class book of pumpkin designs and stories.

This site has a video presentation detailing the process of changing leaf colors. Although the video is specific to leaves found in Maine, it is suitable for students in any area. The video is about 2 minutes long, making it suitable to use as a short introduction to fall changes. There is a link to a text version of information found in the video; however, the link didn't work at the time of the review. Text does appear in the FLASH version, though, for those who may not be able to hear the narration. Several other links to fall foliage information are also available on the site such as kids pages, photo galleries and foliage updates.

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on fall foliage on a projector or interactive whiteboard. After viewing the video, take your class outdoors to view foliage in your community. Use this site when creating state reports to use as a comparison between Maine and your state in the fall. View the site early in the fall to introduce the unit, then take pictures of trees in your area each week to document changes throughout the season. Share the video presentation on your interactive whiteboard or projector as part of your fall festival festivities!

This is a fabulous site filled with information and visuals to teach about the changing colors of fall leaves. Simply roll your mouse over the different leaves to find out what they will look like in the fall. Choices are also available to view cross-sections of leaves in the summer, early fall, and fall to use as a comparison of the changes throughout the seasons. The attached article gives a scientific explanation of why and how leaves change that can be used with older students; however, younger students can still benefit from the graphics and descriptions at the beginning of the page.

Use this site to introduce and discuss how leaves change color each fall before taking your class outside to view what is happening in your area. Before going outside have students draw the different types of leaves shown on the site and try to find them outside. Take a digital camera to view leaves in your area and compare them to graphics shown on the site. Use this site as an introduction to fall changes and take pictures of trees in your area throughout the school year to arrange on a time line to show change throughout the year. Share this site as part of your fall festival!

In the Classroom
Use in a personal hygiene or health course to teach good practices. This is a great addition to family and consumer science or chemistry class for students to see science in practice. This site may inspire some terrific science fair projects, as well. Make your Halloween makeup an all-natural option. Challenge students to create one of the products and share their creations on a video. Share them using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here.

This interactive site shows how parts of an actual autopsy are done. The site does have a disclaimer that the content may be too graphic for some viewers. However, the "person" is a computer drawn, faceless character. You can click through the site, screen by screen, following the onscreen instructions to complete the autopsy. This includes removing the organs and weighing them. The site also includes a short video about an actual forensic scientist. Average metric weight of some human organs is also included in the site.
In the Classroom
This site could be used as an alternative to dissection, an enrichment activity, or as part of a unit that uses crime scene investigation as part of its delivery technique. Anatomy classes could use this practice and review for quizzes or tests on the human body organs and systems. Show the site using the interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to human anatomy or to dissection. If you teach high school biology, this would be a great site during Halloween season, as well: teach anatomy with a creepy feature!

Brainstorm situations that cause fear and identify how the brain processes this information. Explore the similarities of fear responses with the feelings when riding thrill rides. Identify as a class how people respond to fear and ways fear can help you. Creative writing students can explore different ways that people show fear so their writing can describe what fear LOOKS like instead of simply saying, "he was afraid." Why not include this site when studying Poe's tales of terror or as a curriculum-related activity during Halloween season? Check out the "Dealing with Fear" section to help students struggling with anxieties and worry. Emotional or autistic support teachers and school counselors may also find this site helpful in allowing students to understand their body's reactions to fear. Health and psychology classes can use this site to explore the physiology of fear.

Featuring games and entrance to tombs and other exhibitions designed by the Musee de la Civilization in Quebec, the site creates high interest. Take your students back in time to Ancient Egypt and learn about the process of mummification, the jars in which the mummies' parts reside, and get a rich background in ancient Egyptian beliefs.

Explore the world of Nobody Owens, the main character in The Graveyard Book. But, if you want to know more about Nobody's creator, definitely explore this site. Listen to Neil read from his award-winning book. Read interviews to learn more about this fascinating man. Print posters, enjoy wallpapers, and play games based upon Gaiman's work. This wonderful site has an extensive list of free video clips of favorite children's books, author interviews, and author documentaries. Users can open them with Windows Media or Real Player (the listings tell which one is needed). Some clips offer both options. Get the plug ins from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page..This site MUST have a high speed connection! It can be slow to load during "peak" times (11 a.m. to 2 pm Eastern time in the U.S.). Be patient while clips download, even on a peppy network. While the videos are downloading, you may not think anything is happening. TURN OFF your pop-up blocker (including the ones built into the Google and Yahoo toolbars) so you can see the video pop-up windows.

In the Classroom
Preview the video clips before recommending them to students or using in class, since the quality of video and audio varies significantly. None is designed for full screen projection, though some will project about half-screen. Share a partial video with the class or as a center to inspire children to read a book or allow them to watch videos after they have read books. (A Dark, Dark tale would be great for Halloween week). Remember to turn up speakers for group viewing or provide headphones at your center. If you are ready to try podcasting, use these dramatic readings as models for students to record some of their favorite selections as a podcast (and possibly illustrate with student artwork). Share this link with parents on your web page or in your newsletter to encourage reading at home. Most of the books will be in our school library, so students can follow along. School librarians should know about this site as well! Use this lesson plan, and tailor it to fit your unit in almost any content area - math, english, history, science, etc. Though this lesson was intended just for Language Arts classes, most content areas also have books or common themes that this could apply to.
