Harcourt School's website offers many different activities for practicing Math skills taught in their 3rd grade program; however, the activities are free and useful for everyone, no matter what text they use. Activities are divided by math strands - number sense, algebra and functions, measurement and geometry, and statistics, data analysis and probability. Most activities have an interactive element and printable recording sheet that can be used by students. Students can input their own figures which makes the activities less repetitive and more interesting.

Math is Fun when you visit this website that is loaded with games, activities and much more! Math activities are divided into topics such as Algebra, Data, Games, Dictionaries, Worksheets, and more. After choosing a topic there are several choices for appropriate activities within the category. The teachers page has links to many virtual manipulatives, puzzles, speed math and other classroom activities. All activities contain an explanation and solution to the puzzle. Although this site may appear as another "drill and kill" site, is also has a lot of extra features and activities included. If you are a math teacher, this is definitely a site worth taking a look at.

tag(s): logic (243), measurement (160), problem solving (277)

In the Classroom

Use the teacher's page on the interactive whiteboard or projector to demonstrate math concepts such as symmetry, tessellations, and basic algebra concepts. Assign activities and games to students and let them become the expert in one topic. Use the illustrated math dictionary provided on the site as an example and create a class math dictionary of concepts learned. Have students share their new math term on the class wiki. Not comfortable with wikis? Have no wiki worries - check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. This may also be a site that you want to include on your class website for students to use both in and out of the classroom.

This interactive activity is a primary Krypto using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You will build number sense as well as computation skills. The rules are simple: combine five numbers and choose the operation in between to obtain the final "target" number. Primary Krypto uses the numbers 1-10 only. You simply "drag and drop" the numbers to the correct locations. To choose the operation, you click on the smaller boxes and the symbols (+, -, etc) appear. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

In the Classroom

Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. This is an excellent challenge for young gifted students. Have students work in pairs to try out these interactive puzzles. You may find them challenging each other to do more as they become addicted!
