Find yourself some serious puzzlers before heading off to solve the problems on this site maintained by an engineering honor society. While several of the problems at least appear to be solvable by mere mortals, others are clearly targeted to the pros. We offer these for secondary teachers who may be working with students interested in advanced math, logic, and physics. The site is drawn from a print publication, and answers are posted quarterly.

Includes lesson plan This resource requires Flash Celebrate Pi Day (March 14) with this WebQuest! Allow your geometry students to go on a quest to explore ‘pi’ on the web. Please note: one of the activities requires students to have access to the Geometer's Sketchpad Activity Book. However, this activity could easily be skipped. If you are interested in purchasing the book, the ISBN number is #9781559535816. Other assignments include creating a video, writing and essay, and more. This site requires Flash. In the Classroom:
Have students work in cooperative learning groups to complete this Webquest. Share the introduction on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Rather than having students use YouTube to share videos, as the WebQuest suggests, have students try an educational video sharing site such as TeacherTube TeacherTube (explained here).

This simple website should inspire you to make your own WebQuest to invigorate learning. (This one used Googlepages, but there are many other internet hosting sites that offer free or nearly free pages. Math topics include algebra, arithmetic, definitions, geometry, logic, measurement, negative numbers, pi, statistics and more. The website provides detailed descriptions and is written at a level easy for middle school students to decipher.

What can you do with infinity, or pi? While most secondary math curricula are content to merely define them, there’s more to the story. Here’s a site that explains the efforts of Archimedes to identify and explain both terms. Math teachers with an eye toward history will no doubt find a way to integrate some of this material into an interesting class.

This site offers an interesting look at the history of geometry. Learn about geometry during the times of the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks, The Fifth Postulate Controversy, The search for Pi, coordinate geometry, non-Euclidian geometry, differential geometry, and fractal geometry. There is also an Assignment link at the bottom of the site. The assignment challenges students to research a famous mathematician. The research links are provided, and some are very lengthy.

In the Classroom:
Use this site to help your students understand how geometry has evolved throughout the centuries. Have students work in cooperative learning groups (or independently) to research a mathematician. Challenge students to create a blog entry written from the perspective of the mathematician explaining what they have "discovered."


Simpson Math Grade 11 to 12 - Dr. Sarah Greenwald and Dr. Ansdrew Nestler- permalink - Share
Includes lesson plan Will The Simpsons TV show engage your students? Peruse the site to find examples of Simpson clips that can be used as a springboard for discussions or instruction of math functions. The "Guide to Mathematics and Mathematics on the Simpsons" link includes episodes from each season. Another link, "Girls just want to have Sums," has several math and cognition articles worth reading, and a text transcript of a presentation providing a class example of engaging students using the Simpsons.

Of greater use is the link to "Classroom Activity Sheets" that provides engaging ideas for using Simpsons’ scenarios to solve problems in class. Note: These are thought-provoking activities that are open ended and require considerable critical thinking. Examples include: "Are the Simpsons 2D or 3D?", "2D universes," "Pi," "Blackboard Equations," and "The Simpsons Lottery." At the top of the Activity Sheet page is a link for "suggestions" for successfully implementing these activities as well as cautions for changing math gender bias in society and the classroom.

The articles on gender bias and promoting math and science for girls can help promote math and science education for all students.


Classic Books/Vocabulary Grade 4 to 12 - Vocabulary University- permalink - Share
Looking for some vocabulary lists to complement your literature units? This site provides "ready to go" vocabulary lists on countless books. The titles are in alphabetical order. You are able to print out the entire list. Along with each title, the author, and number of vocabulary words are also included. Titles include 1984, Great Expectations, Life on Pi, Lord of the Flies, Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice, Rebecca, Tuesdays with Morrie, and many MANY more. Be aware: the word lists do include some minor advertising.

In the Classroom:
Use these word lists to accompany a unit on any of the book titles available. Students could use these lists along with their own additions, to create ongoing personal or whole-class multi-media or web-based vocabulary notebooks. Try tools such as a wiki or Bookemon (reviewed here).
