Are you interested in numbers? This site has a variety of videos about math theories that are at the forefront of research. Easy, understandable language presents each topic, and this is an entertaining way for anyone to learn fascinating facts about numbers. The Numberphile covers a very broad scope of topics such as Why do people hate mathematics, AMAZING Dice Rolls, and Sounds of PI. Videos vary in length, although most remain well under 15 minutes. Even those who believe they are not good at math will like learning interesting facts about numbers. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable; be sure to look at alternatives for sharing the conversation starters and other videos on classroom computers. Use the search bar to find specific topics faster

tag(s): calculators (38), negative numbers (12), number lines (33), numbers (120), pi (25), prime numbers (25), video (247)

In the Classroom

Share these videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector as wonderful math journal and discussion starters. Choose a video about an interesting number fact that can be used to hook students into a particular lesson or unit. Use the videos to show the fascinating side of mathematics. For example, 666 and its peculiarity in mathematics would be interesting to students. Make a math enrichment center for your gifted students or "hook" math-haters (or girls) by letting them select and critique their own video choice from this site. Embed a video on your class wiki and have students use the discussion tab to comment on what they like about it or were surprised to learn. Use in your blended classroom by flipping and having students view the videos at home to discuss the next day in class. (This is a great option if YouTube is blocked in your school.) Be sure to provide this link on your class website for students (and their families) to access at home. Modify learning by having students make their own advertising videos about their favorite or "lucky" number using a tool such as MoocNote, reviewed here, where students can embed questions, comments, and polls into videos. Then share them on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here.

The main idea of the site is that one needs to understand math; it is not just learned or memorized, and the explanations form the basis of understanding. Topics include Mental Math shortcuts, discovering pi, different bases, and much more. The founder of this site stated: "I want to share hard-won "a ha!" moments in clear and simple language. Even Math shortcuts are fun, I promise." Many of the explanations aren't quite as "clear and simple" as students may like; however, there are a great number of topics explored on the site and they are worth the time to break apart and discuss as a class. Not finding your topic? I know, this is a long list of links. Use the search bar; for example, type in pi and find well over two dozen links for pi.

In the Classroom

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Choose the appropriate topic, explore the explanation as a class, and then ask students to provide an explanation in their own words. Transform learning by challenging students to create their own multimedia presentation of one of the topics presented on the site using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here. Some tool suggestions are (click on the tool name to access the review): Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, Kizoa, and Acast.

This website aims to be the online hub for everything related to Pi, and to promote fun with math! Although a portion of the site contains links to shopping for Pi-related items, there are many valuable resources within the site to use in the classroom. Beginners can learn about Pi through the short explanation at the Learn About Pi link. Under the Celebrate Pi tab, be sure to look at Ways to Celebrate Pi Day for ten classroom ideas - suggestions include eating pie, contests for memorizing the most digits, Pi research ideas, and more.

Math lovers have been known to celebrate the Joys of Pi, and this website offers many opportunities for celebration! The site is based on David Blatner's book of the same name; however, it contains many links and resources for learning about Pi. The most in-depth portion is the links section which contains a long list of Pi links around the web such as Pi History, Pi Mysteries, and Fun with Pi. Who knows, you may want to follow the link to purchase a Pi tie!

Caution: there is a link to American Pi which is a spoof on the movie, American Pie, and may contain some adult themes.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. A good activity for this introduction is to complete the matchstick activity as a class (you could have students or small groups of students draw their answer on an index card to show you). Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Enhance student learning by asking teams to report back on interesting Pi facts or information found using a video explanation tool like Flip, reviewed here. Flip provides a tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Include The Joy of Pi site with your Pi Day celebrations!

Celebrate Pi Day (March 14) with this WebQuest! Allow your geometry students to go on a quest to explore 'pi' on the web. Please note: one of the activities requires students to have access to the Geometer's Sketchpad Activity Book. However, this activity could easily be skipped. If you are interested in purchasing the book, the ISBN number is #9781559535816. Other assignments include creating a video, writing and essay, and more. One note: You will either need to print a copy of The Soda Can Activity Chart, or have students recreate it by hand or on the computer.

In the Classroom

Have students work in cooperative learning groups to complete this Webquest. Share the introduction on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have your students create their video using Edpuzzle reviewed here, rather than having students use YouTube to share videos, as the WebQuest suggests. With Edpuzzle students can add their own voice or add questions or annotations within the video. For the Youtube video on the site, teachers whose school filters the site may not be able to access it, but there are work-arounds or alternatives. You could flip your classroom and have students watch the videos at home.

This simple website should inspire you to make your own WebQuest to invigorate learning. This one used Google pages, but there are many other internet hosting sites that offer free or nearly free pages. Learn more about webquests at TeachersFirst's Webquest 101 and read a review of a possible tool to use, Zunal Webquest, here.
