BAM takes the notion of "fitness made simple" to a new level while making fitness, safety, and disease prevention engaging for kids. The Centers for Disease Control provides a wealth of colorful, visual, and interactive resources for children looking to maintain healthy, fit lifestyles. Sharing information on diseases, food, nutrition, physical activity, safety, and the changing body and mind through children's lingo, articles, and interactives. Access all interactives through the left-hand navigational menu, making it easy for kids to find information. A prominent search box in the upper right-hand corner returns links to articles in the whole CDC site, not just BAM. A teachers' corner provides ideas for integrating these activities into the classroom. Because of some of the mature or disturbing nature of the information, e.g. deadly diseases, be sure to preview materials.

tag(s): bullying (49), child development (26), dental health (21), diseases (73), human body (133), mental health (30), nutrition (160), safety (89)

In the Classroom

BAM is packed with interesting content and engaging activities. Use BAM with the whole class to teach a particular health or science topic using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Small groups and individual students can browse through the sections and play the interactives. Assign specific areas for students to complete at school or home as part of blended or flipped classrooms. Many downloadable handouts are available for classrooms with limited tech.

The scope of this health site is incredible. There are 38 health lessons ranging from body systems, dental health, nutrition, and exercise. You will also find information about diseases like diabetes and cancer, and much more. The lessons are interactive with colorful diagrams and explanations. The drag and drop interaction makes the exercises easy for even the youngest of students. There is no registration, just click on the category and begin learning! This site was created in the United Kingdom. American English speakers may notice some slight spelling differences.

In the Classroom

Initially, share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector during your unit on body systems. Next set up rotating stations where students could learn about several concepts in a week. Create small groups of students to investigate the different categories of the body system and generate a learning station for other students to use. Have them use Adobe Spark in K-12, reviewed here, an online, interactive poster creator. Have them create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Easel.ly, reviewed here. They could then create a quiz for station visitors to complete using QuizBean, reviewed here. The text portions might be challenging for ESL/ELL and younger students. Use Talk Typer, reviewed here, a text to speech program, that will allow these students to copy and paste the text to follow the text as the article or passage is read to them.

This collection of books is all about getting students healthy! Read books about healthy habits and personal wellness. This collection of mostly fiction offerings includes books about eating healthy, staying healthy, fitness, wellness, and healthy approaches to sports. This list is especially deep in offerings for upper elementary and middle school students. CurriConnects thematic book lists include ISBN numbers for ordering or searching, interest grade levels, ESL levels and Lexiles'® to match student independent reading levels to challenge, not frustrate. For more on text complexity and Lexiles'®, see this information from the Lexile Framework. Don't miss other CurriConnects themes being added regularly. In the Classroom

This collection could accompany a unit in health, science, or physical education. These books provide experience with both fiction and nonfiction informational texts. They often require students to draw inferences about the "facts." Allow students (or partners) to choose their own book. Share this list with your school library/media specialist or public library, as well, for them to "pull" books in support of your science/social studies units. Extend the experience by having students create visual presentations of the concepts they learn. Challenge students to create a presentation using Prezi, reviewed here, or Zoho Show, (similar to Powerpoint, but easier and free) - reviewed here.

In the Classroom

This is a fabulous site to use during Dental Health Month! Share the visuals (and quizzes) on your projector or interactive whiteboard. The activities and quizzes are divided into 3 levels (elementary, middle school, and high school). Find a topic/quiz that will work with your students. Challenge older students to investigate one of the topics presented at this site and create an interactive infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, to transform learning & share what their findings.

Crawford the Cat is a website that teaches young children about health issues like brushing your teeth and social skills like working together. There are numerous 5-minute videos teaching students about good table manners, trying new food, exercise, colds and flu, and several other health/science topics. The site includes videos, online books, printables and interactive games.

In the Classroom

This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the videos on the board and then play the games on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students who need skills reinforcement, and the books can be used as a center. The students have the choice of having the books read to them or reading on their own, so the site addresses the abilities of all students.
