3 Act Math shares problems to complete 3 Act Math tasks for grades 4 - high school students, including geometry, algebra 2, statistics, and calculus. 3 Act Math tasks consist of three parts - an engaging and perplexing problem to spark curiosity, collecting data and solving the problem, and the teacher revealing the answer to the problem and reflecting upon student activities. After selecting and opening the problem, each activity shares resources such as videos broken down by acts. All materials are available to download as a single Google file and are correlated to Common Core Standards. Learn more about 3 Act Math by taking the free workshop on this site, including links to additional lessons for grades K and up. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Introduce 3 Act Math into any math classroom as an engaging way for students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. When introducing 3-Act Math activities, use Google Slides, reviewed here as a visual tool to reinforce the concept of the tasks. Create a three-slide presentation with a slide for each act that includes the video, questions, or supporting images used for the task. For younger students, ask them to share their responses and ideas and add that information to your presentation. For older students, add a slide for each student or group to share their responses. Extend learning by asking students to share reflections on the activity, including discussions of their predictions - what worked, what didn't, and how they made adjustments throughout the activity. Share those reflections as part of your original slide presentation, or ask students to use a video creation tool like moovly, reviewed here to share their problem-solving steps.

Microsoft Math Solver provides step-by-step directions for solving algebra, trigonometry, and calculus problems. The Math Solver also includes a graphing feature to visualize functions. Use this tool to find answers to specific problems, or use the practice link to find quizzes on different topics, including linear equations, inequalities, and more. If using the app, enter any problem manually or snap a picture of the problem using the device camera. Microsoft Math Solver supports many different languages, making it a valuable tool for use in all classrooms.

This site is perfect for use on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the practice problems to engage students when learning new math concepts. Create a link on classroom computers for students to use when checking work. Share a link on your class website for students to use at home. Have students provide their attempts at problem-solving. Have students share where they were stuck or having problems in finding a correct answer. How do you prevent this from becoming an instant homework "cheat?" Always start with actual word problems, not equations, so students must first generate their own equations. Require students to "show their work" on paper as they solve, including explaining each step. Even if they are copying from the website, they are still copying down the explanations. If they use their own words, that will show comprehension.

In the Classroom

LibreTexts is a bonanza for AP and teachers of gifted students. Take advantage of the free texts, course outlines, and homework resources to differentiate instruction and provide lessons for advanced students. Choose resources from LibreTexts for use in any classroom to supplement current materials. As part of career-planning activities, ask students to browse through topics that interest them. Encourage students to collaborate with others with similar career interests, both in the classroom and globally. Extend learning by suggesting that students participate in Ted-Ed Clubs, reviewed here. These Clubs allow participants to share in global meetings with peers that have a common interest. As students learn more about their chosen field, encourage them to interact with members of your community to ask questions and perhaps job shadow as a way to understand the career through personal experience. If using course materials and textbooks found on LibreTexts, this is the perfect opportunity for students to ask clarifying questions from their mentor. Enhance learning by making students the experts. Ask them to present their career findings using a multimedia tool like Sway, reviewed here, to share the information learned with peers.

Install (or request installation) on classroom computers for student use when working with or reading statistics or numbers. Display on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to help students compare and relate numbers to physical objects or similar items. Challenge students to add their own number "annotations" to passages they read, especially when doing close reading of informational texts. Make number sense a routine part of reading.

Use Gooru to differentiate instruction based on students' current performance. Many students are motivated to learn at their own pace using online tools, and Gooru is an option providing lessons in a different format than currently available. If not using Gooru whole -class, it provides many options for helping and enhancing learning for individual students, use for homework, or as a temporary option for providing instruction to home-bound students. Enhance classsroom technology and provide additional support to student learning by asking them to use Pathbrite, reviewed here, to build a digital portfolio of their learning process. Include images, videos, and written work within the portfolio.

Ask groups of students to work on topics together then share their results with the class.
