Instructables.com has a curated collection of STEAM projects complete with step-by-step directions, photos, and tips for completion. Some even have video clips to help with the directions. Projects range in age level from lower elementary to high school. The contributor, The Oakland Toy Lab, designed everything with accessibility in mind. Each project can be created with widely available and relatively low-cost materials. In addition, teachers can create a free account to download printable PDFs of step-by-step directions of each activity. Be aware that this collection is posted as a part of a larger website of community-contributed content, so some Instructables may not be appropriate for a school environment.

Expand upon the ideas found on this site to bring other art forms into the lessons. For example, take advantage of poetry resources and interactives found at ReadWriteThink, reviewed here, and have students create diamante, acrostic, and haiku poems relating to your lessons. This very simple tool allows users to add images and text to create a beautiful website using the provided templates. Be sure to ask students to include a reflective writing piece describing their learning throughout your unit. Take learning to the highest level and ask students to design and create a series of podcasts using Anchor, reviewed here. Ask students to discuss their learning activities, and also hypothesize on different outcomes of experiments when changing elements or activities. For example, if creating a podcast discussing changes in matter, have students share their thoughts on how the room and outdoor temperature affects outcomes. What if they used juice instead of water? Would the change from ice to liquid take the same amount of time?

Have older students extend learning through the use of Canvas LMS, reviewed here. Ask them to research and find additional information on the topic of your lesson and create a learning path for other students to complete. For younger students, create a Symbaloo Learning Path for students to complete as a center activity to complement your STEAM learning activities.

Capture the interest of your most reluctant students with these STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) projects presented through music videos and guided inquiry challenges. Rock videos provide the basis for the learning concepts followed by a series of question and answers along with student challenges. Examples found on the site include lessons on simple machines demonstrated through a chain reaction and creating sound through everyday objects. Other resources include educator guides and student journal worksheets. If your school blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Delight your students with the videos and activities provided on the site to include with your current science lessons. Place students in groups to complete the challenges offered. Introduce the Smithsonian collection resources on an interactive whiteboard or projector and explore the included items together. Flip your classroom and include a link to museum resources for students to explore before your lessons, and have them create online stickies sharing their thoughts on collection pieces using lino, reviewed here. Instead of having students complete written responses during your lesson, ask them to respond to questions using a video response tool like Gravity, reviewed here. Gravity offers users the opportunity to submit video responses to questions and add comments to other users' responses. Thingiverse offers over 15,000 3D printing designs and enough lesson plans to keep a classroom busy all school year. All free! Discover lessons for K-5, 6-8, 9-12 and university levels. Also, find lessons categorized by subject. By clicking on any of these categories, you can then search the new page by both grade level and subject i.e. K-5 and Special Education. Click Explore or use the search bar from the top and find Quick Projects, Building Bridges, and Featured Projects. If you are really into 3D and want to design your own project, you can do that at Thingiverse, too. Thingiverse's 3D printing documents from this tool only work on MakerBot or Stratasys printers.
